> NEEDLE LOCALIZATION
A needle localization is an office procedure that is
performed to help a surgeon locate an area of concern that cannot be felt
through the skin.
Why is it done?
If a patient has a mass or other area of concern that
cannot be felt through the skin, Dr. Bertrand may perform a needle localization
to aid the surgeon in locating and removing the tissue.
How is it done?
In this procedure, Dr. Bertrand
uses mammography or ultrasound to locate the area of concern. Then, after using
a local anesthetic, she inserts a small needle and places a guidewire with a
small hook at the site of the mass. The needle is then removed. The patient
then re-dresses and goes to a nearby surgical center where the wire is used to
guide the surgeon to the exact location of the area of concern so it can be
removed.
Do I need to do anything
special before having this procedure?
Yes, but those instructions will
come from your surgeon.
When will I get the results?
You will receive the results from
your surgeon.
