BREAST HEALTH
> FINE-NEEDLE ASPIRATION
Fine-needle aspiration is a technique used to remove
fluid or a small sample of tissue from the breast. It may be done to determine
the composition of a lump or mass in the breast. With the advent of stereotactic
core biopsies, this procedure is not used as often today as it was a decade ago.
How is it done?
After using a local anesthetic, Dr. Bertrand will locate
the area of concern using ultrasound or computer mapping. Then she will insert
a very thin needle and syringe to remove either fluid or a small sample of
tissue that will be sent away for analysis under a microscope.
Do I need to do anything special before having this
procedure?
No.
When will I get the results?
Usually within two days. Before
you leave, we will set up an office visit where you will receive the results.
