> CYST ASPIRATION
A cyst aspiration is an office procedure in which
fluid is removed from a cyst in the breast.
How is it performed?
The patient lies on a padded
table. After administering a local anesthetic, Dr. Bertrand uses ultrasound to
locate the cyst, then extracts fluid via a needle and syringe.
Why is it done?
Sometimes a patient will feel a
cyst in the breast, or a cyst will be seen on a mammogram. In most cases, there
is no reason to remove the cyst. However, if it is painful or is obscuring
detail of the breast on a mammogram, the cyst should be drained. About one of
four cysts will come back.
Do I need to do anything
special before having this procedure?
No.
When will I get the results?
In most cases, the cyst is simply
drained without any testing, so there are no results. However, if a cyst is
inflamed or infected, Dr. Bertrand may send the fluid off for analysis by a
pathologist. In those cases, you can expect to get results by phone within one
or two days.
